J. Renée Navarro, MD, PharmD, UCSF's inaugural vice chancellor of opportunity and outreach and professor of anesthesia and perioperative care, has been elected to the Association of American Medical Colleges (AAMC) Board of Directors for a two-year term (2026–28).

As a member of the AAMC Board of Directors, Dr. Navarro will help shape the work of the nation’s leading academic medicine association, providing strategic guidance on issues affecting the future of academic medicine, including medical education, biomedical research, patient care, and health policy.

“It is a privilege to have the opportunity to serve academic medicine and our critical mission during this time of challenge and opportunities,” said Dr. Navarro. “I am excited to work with colleagues from across the country to innovate and improve all aspects of the profession.”

Dr. Navarro brings extensive AAMC leadership experience, having served as the inaugural chair of the Group on Women in Medicine and Science, chair of the Group on Diversity and Inclusion, and a member of numerous AAMC working committees.

At UCSF, Dr. Navarro oversees efforts to expand and sustain opportunity, foster a welcoming and supportive community, and advance culturally humble education, discovery, and patient care.

Dr. Navarro earned her PharmD from the University of the Pacific before earning her MD and completing her residency at UCSF. She is a professor of anesthesia and perioperative care. She cared for patients at Zuckerberg San Francisco General Hospital and Trauma Center, where she served as director of perioperative services and president of the medical staff.  She also served as associate dean of Faculty Affairs in the School of Medicine, director of academic diversity, and interim vice provost of Faculty Affairs for all of UCSF.

The AAMC is the nation’s leading nonprofit association representing academic medicine. Dr. Navarro's term on the AAMC Board of Directors begins Nov. 10, 2026.
